The healing process of the fractures:

  1. The recovery stage of granulation tissue -----at this stage the hematoma organizes in the fractured part. The capillary vessels invade and the hematoma gradually changes into granulation tissue. This stage completes 2-3 weeks after injury. From clinical observation, swelling, pain and elastic angulation activities still exist on the fractured part. There are some intramembranous ossification images in the X-ray.
  2. The formative stage of callus – the procedures of intramembranous ossification in periosteum and endosteum. The ossifying parts of both fracture ends gradually approach and connect, hematoma is in the area of the fracture, and the cartilage formed in the first stage begins to ossify. This stage completes 6 to10 weeks after injury. There are no swellings, no tenderness or abnormal activities in the fractured parts. In the X-ray, both ends of the intramembranous ossification parts are connected and the cartilage ossification is united, the callus shows fusiform shape and fracture line is visible. This is the clinical healing stage.
  3. Healing stage of the fractures - the callus range and bone density gradually increase and new bone trabecula in the callus increases and alignments are getting in order as well. The borderline between callus and bone substance is blurry and fracture line disappears. The marrow cavity is blocked by callus. This stage completes 8-12 weeks after injury. ?The fracture heals well and the injured limb can be used again.
  4. Moulding stage - at this stage the bone structure is rebuilt according to mechanics principle, the redundant callus is absorbed, and marrow cavity is open again. The fracture mark almost disappears. This stage completes 1-2 years after injury.
